Designed a user-friendly parenting app tailored for first-time parents, facilitating quick and reliable access to information; effectiveness was assessed through the analysis of user feedback ratings and app reviews.

THE PROBLEM

Young first-time parents often feel lost and confused about finding reliable and authentic information about parenting.

Interviewing Users

I started the design process by interviewing first-time parents for the initial user research. Two male and three female participants were interviewed. The results helped me recognize the users' pain points and develop the problem statements.

THE GOAL

Baby Genie will let users quickly and easily find reliable parenting information in one place.

Conceptualizing the Baby Genie App

Our Baby Genie app will let users quickly and easily find reliable parenting information in one place which will affect how parents face parenting challenges by providing a straightforward and stress-free user experience. It will also affect how parents learn about raising their children by providing a virtual parenting guide backed by expert and science-backed information.

Discovering and Defining User Pain Points

I employed the design thinking process to delve deeper into users' pain points and craft detailed user personas.
The findings showed that first-time parents have many questions and doubts about caring for their babies. They are often overwhelmed with friendly advice, misinformation, and myths online.
Such confusion negatively affects the parenting experience and makes it more stressful for parents.

Users felt there was a huge amount of information available which made it difficult for them to sift through.

Users had a difficult time differentiating authentic information from misinformation.

Inaccessibility to multiple expert opinions

Users reported lack of readily available and verifiable expert advices.

Crafting User Personas

Consequently, I developed aggregated empathy maps to differentiate between what the users think, say, feel, and do. Based on the findings, I developed two user personas that would represent the target audience.

Mariam is a stay-at-home mother of one who needs a quick, easy, and simple way to find parenting information in one place because she gets overwhelmed by the amount of information available online.
If Mariam uses the Baby Genie App then she will quickly and easily find parenting information in one place.

Jay is a businessman and a father of one who needs a reliable virtual parenting guide because he gets confused by the amount of factually incorrect information that’s prevalent online.
If Jay uses the Baby Genie App then he will find a reliable virtual parenting guide.

Developing User Journeys

Once I constructed the user personas, I developed user journeys to further understand the pain points and emotions of the users as well as to recognize improvement opportunities during their journeys of finding accurate parenting-related information online.

Ideating Creative Solutions

I conducted competitor audits, Crazy Eights and How Might We exercises to craft user-friendly solutions, which helped me devise the information architecture and user flow. Analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of five direct and indirect competitors, I identified the gaps and opportunities that Baby Genie could utilize.

• Providing 24/7 access to digital experts (GP, psychologists, coaches, etc.)
• Developing a virtual parenting guide to help adults navigate parenting challenges
• Providing a platform for parents to connect with nearby parents and chat in real time using geolocation technology.
• Providing a section for the most common myths and science-backed solutions

User Flow

Creating Digital Wireframes and Mockups

After considering time restrictions and the project's scope, I sketched paper wireframes to design a positive user experience and transformed them into digital wireframes for testing. Once I finished designing the wireframes, I conducted a usability study to understand the effectiveness of the app.
The findings were very insightful and helped me understand the user needs better. I made multiple design changes and incorporated them in the mockups.

Iterations Based on Usability Studies

I conducted two rounds of unmoderated usability studies with five first-time parents, both males and females. The study aimed to understand the difficulties first-time parents faced in acquiring parenting information.

Round 1: Users were confused about the types of experts available. Based on that insight I designed filters on the homepage to provide straightforward options.

Round 2: One major design flaw was lack of backward navigation. Based on user insights, I made the CTA button right at the top and a back arrow to go to the previous screen.

Designing Interactive Prototypes

Once the mockup was designed according to the visual design principles, I began iterating the design to make it more user-centric and in line with the existing design systems. As a result, I transitioned the mockup from a static visual depiction to an interactive high-fidelity prototype.
